Meng Liu

Meng is a feminist and unionist activist who is dedicated to advocate for migrant workers' economic justice.

Meng came to Australia from Mainland China as an international student in 2018. The lived experience of being a victim of wage theft and sham contracting in the hospitality & gig economy before and during the pandemic and witnessing the rampant exploitative working conditions in the CALD community made her realise the importance of unionisation of vulnerable workers. Since then, she has developed an interest in Industrial Relations, become an active union member and proactively supports community members to take industrial actions against exploitative employers while campaigning for systemic changes, such as the criminalisation of wage theft in SA.

Meng has worked at the Working Women's Centre SA as the Junior Advocacy Officer and volunteered at SA Labour Info Hub in community education and organising. Currently she works at the United Workers Union.

Meng strongly believes in the power of personal narrative and community organising. Outside of work, Meng is also passionate about advocating for people who share other similar life experiences. She had lots of first-hand stories to tell: working in residential aged care during the shortage of staff and COVID panic, proudly living as an autistic adult and the traumatic but resilient story of the journey of skilled immigration. She is always open to talking about her experiences and the experiences of others to enable long term systemic change towards more just economic and migration systems.
